A clue to a possible new functional food product.
From Lifeway's latest 10Q.
In October 1998 the Company finalized a sublicense agreement with GalaGen, Inc., with an effective date of May 1, 1998. Pursuant to the agreement, the Company obtained the exclusive worldwide rights to two patents, for the duration of the patents, to produce and sell kefir-culture based products which contain immunoglobulins, such as the Company's new functional food product, Basic Plus (TM).
The owner of the patents is Metagenics, Incorporated.
Here are the only two patents I can find for Metagenics:
(Patent #1) Ascorbic acid compositions providing enhanced human immune system activity.
Abstract
A vitamin C supplement comprising ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, niacinamide ascorbate, calcium ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate, potassium ascorbate, and sodium ascorbate which together can be administered to a human to avoid the transitory initial suppression of human NK cell activity which is present when ascorbic acid alone is administered. Also included is xylitol, lysine acetate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, ribose, cysteine, and hesperidin which further prolongs the biological activity of ascorbic acid and promotes the uptake of ascorbic acid by human tissue.

(Patent #2) Immunoglobulin and fiber-containing composition for human gastrointestinal health.
Abstract
A composition for restoring and maintaining gastrointestinal health comprises 40-60% by weight of an immunoglobulin composition comprising concentrated immunologically active immunoglobulins and 40-60% by weight of soluble dietary fiber selected from inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides, pectin, guar gum, and mixtures thereof. The immunoglobulin and fiber-containing composition can optionally contain one or more of a beneficial human intestinal microorganism, components of a non-immune natural defense system, an iron-sequestering molecule, and gluconic acid. Preferred beneficial human intestinal microorganisms include lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. The immunologically active immunoglobulins are preferably purified from bovine milk, milk products, or whey. Methods of use are also described.
Inventors: Paul; Stephen M. (San Clemente, CA). Assignee: Metagenics, Inc. (San Clemente, CA).
Of course the #2 patent here is describing 'Basics Plus'. The #1 patent doesn't cover any known product that Lifeway is presently producing. This could mean that there will be another functional food product with Galagen for providing enhanced human immune system activity. That would be one for gastrointestinal health and another for immune enhancement. Reading the 'Basics Plus' label shows that there aren't any ascorbic acid compositions in the ingredients.
It's something to think about and hope for.
