The PD drives reads regular CD ROMS but it writes a 'special'
proprietary cartridge. It is slow and expensive.

The PD drive is a 'tweener':

It is too expensive to compete against the Zip and is too slow
to compete against the Jazz drive. The product will be squashed
by a combination of the Zip, Jazz and DVD.

I predict the product will be discontinued by Christmas.

I'd rather have my Zip and an 8x CD ROM drive any day of the week.
