James,
I live in Silicon Valley and know of Apple's plight well. In the early eighties Apple actually donated a very large amount of computer hardware and software to local colleges and universities in the hopes that they could "hook" users into being eventual Apple home users. The result was that those same students that used those computers still did not have a lot of money and looked for price point as their incentive. True some did take the bait but not a significant market share was gained using this strategy. Student populations are actually quite insignificant when it comes to market share. The lion's share of the profits comes from business and we all know who owns that sector and who will continue to. Look at Dell Computers and Compaqs sales for the last five years and it's all the proof needed for the arguement. To put it bluntly....stick a fork in them....they are done.
