In its Friday editions, USA Today reported that the Arizona senator -- a vigorous opponent of political special interests -- helped SunCor Development and its parent Pinnacle West Capital broker a deal to sell land surrounding Luke Air Force Base, near Phoenix, to the Pentagon.
McCain inserted a $14.3 million provision in a 2003 defense bill to allow the Air Force to buy land around the base. SunCor ended up getting $3 million for 122 acres it was selling, the largest of the land transactions. It also donated an additional 122 acres. USA Today said SunCor officials had been upset that state laws prohibited development around the base.
The Air Force determined that it needed to buy land around the base to prevent development that would hinder flight operations at the base.
SunCor's sales price was twice the Pentagon's value for the land and three times the county's assessed value, the publication said. It said people connected to Pinnacle West have donated $224,000 to McCain's campaigns since 1998, and $104,100 to this year's presidential run.
