It seems reasonable that any mogul who offers Times shareholders a premium on the price of the company's stock -- say, $30 -- could break the Sulzberger family's hold on the institution, says Russ Smith. "The only flaw in my theory, which I still think is basically sound, is that Sam Zell's nightmare with Tribune Co. has probably scared away vanity buyers, and what other media corporation has the wherewithal to buy the Times?"
