Laptop owners: does your cursor sometimes jump while typing? Does it highlight some text and erase it? This has driven me bonkers for months. I think I found the solution. I checked system files in Win98SE and was told the Synapsis touchpad driver was corrupted. I reinstalled [Dell did not make it easy and I'm unimpressed with their recovery CDs, to put it mildly].

I had been using a USB mouse, so never noticed that the touch pad was not fully functional. After reinstallation of the touchpad software, the tp icon was back in the system tray. Clicking 'properties' I selected 'touch' and adjusted the 'palm check' slider to the right. The help file says...

Palm Check

The Palm Check slider controls the TouchPad’s detection of accidental and unwanted pointing movement. In addition to detecting palm contact with the TouchPad, the TouchPad can ignore much of the accidental and unwanted pointer movement that may occur while typing (due to accidentally contacting your TouchPad). See Prevent Accidental Pointing While Typing for more details.

It seems to have corrected the problem.
