Casting For Oliver Stone’s Bush Bio Moves Ahead

By Dirty Harry on General
Libertas

Lot’s of casting news for Oliver Stone’s George W. Bush biopic. Barabra Streisand’s stepson will play The Abraham Lincoln of the Middle East; Dirty Harry favorite Elizabeth Banks has been cast as Laura Bush; James Cromwell and Ellen Burnstyn will play George H.W. and Barbara Bush Sr.

As a gift to Republicans, Stone’s goal is to have “W” in theatres in time for the November election. Oliver Stone + Bush biopic + election year = Republican turnout. Does anyone think Fahrenheit 9/11 didn’t help us?

This could also be a two-fer. Stone’s movie could end up being terrific — more JFK than Nixon. Hollywood has one great liberal propagandist left and it’s Oliver Stone. My gut tells me that this is an aging baby-boomer in an ill-conceived rush to have his say on current events before he croaks, but I could be wrong.

The problem is, this isn’t All The President’s Men.
Watergate was obviously a major historical event, but there was no need for it to be vetted by history. Nixon was a crook, he resigned, end of story. A movie a few years afterwards made sense. Bush’s impact, however, is world-altering. The verdict on Iraq, Afghanistan, and the war on militant Islam will take a decade or two to come in. “W” is obviously Stone attempting to have his effect on that verdict, something he also tried with the JFK asassination, but that didn’t turn out so well. Stone certainly made a great film, but the only verdict was that he’s a little insane.

Still … Elizabeth Banks. Yowza.
