Tony, I agree with your general assessment of Intel. I wish i had confidence in it and just held onto the shares. Instead, i had to buy back in the 77 to 78 range. This stock should continue keep going up since it is basically a near monopoly like MSFT but without the government on its back. I am planning to add some shares after reducing my QCOM and dumping AOL. (I hope that AOLTV story keeps this thing afloat at least at the open on Monday).

Intel also has technology that simply can't be easily duplicated by putting together a bunch of computer experts. A lot more goes into putting together the technology necessary to produce those chips.

However, one thing working for MSFT is that the user of the PC there are a lot of people hooked on MSFT because it interfaces with the user. It is extremely costly, time consuming for companies to train their employees on alternative software. Of course as they employees get hooked on MSFT, they will have a tendency to prefer MSFT software for home use, as it is easy to learn one package if you have learned another from the same company. There tends to be similiar commands.
If MSFT had not focussed on corporations (with Windows2k etc.), there may have been the possibility they could have lost customers in the future.

Once MSFT starts the hype on Windows2k, it will pick up steam for other software from MSFT. What happens if they settle with the DOJ? Those that developed a negative image of MSFT during the trial will simply forgive and forget. People have a tendency to have only a short term memory.

Cisco and Intel can be replaced and the end user won't really be affected. These probably have a brand loyalty, especially INTEL.
I am not as convinced of Cisco. However as long as a person can use their software, who cares what chip is inside. That is why i just call it a loyalty to Intel. With MSFT it is a matter of knowledge and loyalty.

I don't believe Intel holds the upper hand in their relationship with MSFT. MSFT is what is going to drive Intel sales to a bigger corporate market (with Windows2k). We know that consumer PC prices continue to decline and that may not be as good a market as it used to be for INTEL.

Bottom line---i love MSFT and INTEL both but for different reasons.

BTW--I still need to see that Intel inside before i buy a PC.
