When I was 4 or 5 years old we went camping in a camp ground situation in the mountains. In the middle of the night there was an uproar of which I was told to stay in the tent and keep quiet. In the morning the tent right next to ours has bear paw slashes through the side of it. The one right next door. ( perhaps the bear smelt food ) Then I notice the man who was up and packing his things was wearing pajamas with the same slashes in it on his back and blood on his pyjamas. That is as close as I have been other than another time I was in a logging camp in my teens. We stayed in little cottages provide by the camp. The fellow next door was a complete drunk. Every check was soon gone and he was broke between pays. He made homemade wine and when I was there he offered it to me. At first it tasted awful but I drank some to be polite. Soon it tasted not bad and eventually was quite good. I staggered home quite drunk.

When I came into the cabin everyone was yelling and excited saying that I had just walked inches away from a bear. I was too loaded to care and felt sick and flopped on my bed and I did not believe them anyways. They continued on for days about it and even told the story to strangers who visited. The bear was digging in the garbage which we kept at the front gate ( believe it or not our cabin had a fence don't ask me why anyone would build it ) I walked through the opening where the gate once was which was right beside where we left the garbage. They all said that as I walked toward the cabin they were watching the bear and they saw how loaded I was and staggering. The bear apparently looked at me coming for a while and as I got close decided I was not as interesting as the garbage and ignored me completely. I never saw it and only believed after much insistence the next day from the others. When I was a child I lived for a while in Jasper and used to go on the roof at night and watch the bears go up and down the alley checking out the garbage cans. I don't know if they still do but when I was young everyone just knew not to go at supper around the alleys.

Black bears just want food. They are not mean but I hear that grizzlys are mean and will just attack for no reason.
Never saw a grizzly in the wild. Reminds me of this verse:

Proverbs 17:12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

Later.. just had to put in a verse :-}
