But if we don't keep people scared stupid about the environment or some other invisible bogey man we won't be able to exercise control over large populations.

The nukes never flew, the communist menace never existed and we have no effective way of fighting the Chinese so don't even go there.

But an imaginary menace is a good tactic.

Who knows what interesting new technologies and products might be developed in Quixotic fashion. Don't try and tell me you don't drink gallons of Tang every day.
