Characteristics of Pomegranate:

These arils contain large quantities of two groups of polyphenols: Anthocyanins -- which give the pomegranate its characteristic red colour -- and hydrolysable tannins, responsible for the strong antioxidant activity.

Studies show the fruit's high content in several hydrolysable tannins leads to an antioxidant activity three times higher than red wine or green tea.

By preventing damage to the wall of the blood vessels, antioxidant activity helps prevent cardiovascular disease.

In addition to being antioxidants, pomegranate's polyphenols seem to play a part in preventing of cancer.

Dr. Hasan Mukhtar and his team at the University of Wisconsin showed the administration of pomegranate juice to animals carrying prostate tumours significantly reduced the progression of the tumours and led to a dramatic decline in PSA levels, a marker that indicates the presence of prostate cancer.

This protective effect is also observed among humans. In a study of patients with prostate cancer who had undergone surgery or radiotherapy, Dr. Allan Pantuck and his team of UCLA researchers showed a daily consumption of 250 mL of pomegranate juice reduced the likelihood of relapse.
