Electrical engineering has been doing the same for 150 years transforming Kinetic energy into electricity.

For use on the ground it is OK.

But for use in space (send man to the Moon, powering up all kinds of satellites and deep space probes other sources were needed.

Hence, the best brains on the business worked in other 3 types of transformation of some energy into electricity.

All much more expensive than transforming kinetic energy into electricity

  • Chemical
    • Batteries to store energy in space. Light weight. Deep charge as you can face the Sun only half of the orbit.
    • Goals:
      • More Ah per unit of weight and space.
      • Fastest charging time.
  • Nuclear
    • Use heat from radioactive decay, put a thermo-couple and generate electricity for a couple of decades and store with light weight and efficient batteries
  • Solar.
    • Capture sunlight with the most efficient way as weight and time of exposure to the Sun are limitations.

All 3 were costly and could not compete with the traditional technologies of transforming kinetic energy in to electricity.

Battery race:

Mobile telephony appeared. A new race started to discover who could provide the technology to store electricity.. More Ah per unit of weight and space. Fastest charging time.

Solar panel race:
If one look at the amount of technologies the NREL Chart shows. That is evolution at work. The best ones, keep evolving. Some are left behind and disappear. New ones appear, and some others we even haven't thought yet, will appear.

As the price of solar solutions went down, it started being competitive with other sources of electricity. With the environmentalists push the economics of scale appeared.

Producing solar panels will be like producing micro-chips. Gigantic scale. May be 2 or 3 gigantic producers only

Gains will continue to the foreseeable future with year after year making gains of efficiency.
