Diagnostic value of nuclear stress testMy cardiologist has scheduled me for one of these tests on Wednesday following some discomfort experienced over the weekend. My last CAC score in May was 130 and I am wondering if this test can successfully determine if I am having any current heart issues. Got a trip coming up and seeking some definitive and mind easing answers.

Why don't you do a stress echo, a sonogram of the heart so you don't get radiation? To my knowledge it is just as good as a stress echo without radiation. Search the site for stress echo

the protocol for stress echo is fairly standardized and includes pre- and post- "2D" imaging" using four different views, all viewed in a "quad screen" format for side-by-side comparison, pre- and post-. The only time color Doppler might be added is when specific issues arise, e.g., left ventricular outflow tract obstruction due to asymmetric interventricular septal hypertrophy. Exercise-induced mitral insufficiency would be another reason. So, in general, there is no need to request color Doppler. Charlie--Whenever possible in an active, nimble person, stress echo is every bit as good as a nuclear study minus the radiation. Stress nuclear studies do provide a slightly different perspective, but are most useful for overweight people who are somewhat less nimble.
