Affirmative action is not as critical in the "liberal arts" educational arena and job market. Where it is very critical is the hard sciences where 'what goes good with blue' is not going to carry the day.

When we sit down at a dentist's chair or undergo an medical operation, we want to know that the person has run the gauntlet and was not shuffled along by a compromised system.

That is not to say that I am against affirmative action, but a person may/should be allowed in the door, but that person must bring himself/herself up to speed or be removed from the position.

From one glaring situation I observed first hand, a marginally qualified individual was placed in a job, over two very qualified individuals. The two had passed a battery of hard science examinations administered by a State board. The affirmed individual was not required to take and pass those same exams, in a reasonable time-frame, to remain in the position. Much of the work is a cooperative effort by other qualified individuals in that department on behalf of the "empowered" employee. That individual remains in that position today and the two other employees have left the organization.

This situation, especially in the less "touchy-feely" employment areas, is not only dangerous for society, but destructive to the integrity of the field and the individuals involved longer term.
