Alcatel has demonstrated that they are big enough to able to afford a few billion dollars of yearly losses in 1995. These were mostly write offs but I think that that episode still has a depressing effect on Alcatels share price. I think that Alcatel will be the most succesful player in the DSL field but the total DSL market is not yet big enough to make any difference to Alcatels business success. Therefore Alcatel stock is currently not a play on the DSL market. Nonetheless I consider Alcatel at current prices a attractive play on telecommunications and other technology and would buy some stock if I had any money left. Andreas
