Curious about the above snippet from the USA Today story, I visited the Gallup Web site. This is what a recent Gallup poll turned up to the question: "In general, are you satisfied or dissatisfied with the way things are going in America today?"

62 percent of Republicans are satisfied, compared with 34 percent who are not satisfied. No surprise here.

Among Democrats: 34 percent are satisfied compared with 64 percent who are dissatisfied. No surprise here.

But there is a mild surprise (in my opinion) among independents. Only 44 percent are satisfied with the direction the country is headed, compared with 54 percent who are dissatisfied.

How these figures translate into Republican success during the mid-term election ... in view of the independent percentages ... confuses me.

We shall see.
