Within limits, this is true. But there are memory controllers that are compatible with both FPM and EDO, SDR SDRAM and VC SDRAM, and even both SDR and DDR. However, radical flexibility, such as supporting both DDR SDRAM and DRDRAM would be costly, both in terms of complexity and performance.
