Ascend Communications (NASD: ASND) will announce earnings after the close on July 9th. Most investors feel that earnings will be beat. I am expecting .21 for Q2, but I have heard anywhere from .21 to .25. The mean expected is only .19. The high expected is .20. Earnings at .21 will be another 100% analyst surprise for this growth company.
The stock price is not moving much due to the typical earnings letdowns everyone goes through following the Spring quarter. There is also word that they will be late shipping the TNT project, which the company confirms as late as today will ship on time. If you have been following this stock, you know Ascend was backordered last quarter, yet the inventory was 4X normal. My guess then and now is that they are artificially boosting Q2 as Q1 was easily beat. Moving that inventory to orders during Q1 would have made Q2 VERY difficult to meet as the analysts would have forcast earnings up from the Q1 surprise.
For the record, I am holding a very, very (insane) large chunk of ASND right now. My plan is to buy while the price is still lingering near recent lows, hold through the earnings release, and sell on the movement up due to the likely surprise. I didn't conclude all of this after buying ASND, but before I ever bought a share. The numbers are very telling. Following the boost in price, I will reconsider my long term strategy based on the new stock price.
PS: Sorry. Didn't mean to post in other ASND post. This was the original target. I agree, a new Ascend folder is needed about now.
