Re the dsl enhancements of Globespan, I have no cause to doubt or downplay whatever algorithm improvements they claim to have effected in the XDSL2 chips. But I don't see this significantly changing performance in light of the lower speeds that they will deliver to the 30kft subscribers. I'd like to see the wire-gauge qualifiers on this.
If this is an improvement (144 kb/s, which mimics the speed of IDSL), then it is marginal, although I can see it opening up a new set of offerings by service providers.
In the same breath, however, the larger service providers (namely the BOCs) have been loathe to offer variable services in this space, preferring to provide a uniform set of service attributes, speed being among the most notable.
Also, I don't see the braod range of speeds as a great leap, considering that rate-adaptive dsl has existed for a long time, which effectively does the same thing, albeit at shorter distances, most likely. If that's the point, then so be it. But I'm probably missing a very germane issue here, so maybe someone else can point it out to me/us.
