Right.

IBM is in discussions to sell the network to ATT. It looks done. The network is rickety to some extent and is based on old hardware and protocols. Maintenance is high, yield is mediocre at best, and IBM would like to get out of that business altogether. It isn't the network itself that is desirable, rather ATT wants the customer base. The intent is to redo the physical layer including satellite and cellular and offer a faster, cheaper, more robust service. The longer run objective is to utilize the fiber optic cable being laid in the world's oceans to provide a high integrity worldwide communications system carrying video, data , and voice. IBM's network is weak in video and voice if it offers it locally at all.
