all along i knew there was something fishy about your patience...

I had a fish tank once for about a year. A colleague talked me into it. I found it fascinating for maybe three days. I was just as happy when all the fish finally died. Used the fish tank as a terrarium.

do you think we are all institutionable ?

As I approach retirement, I can't help pondering some of life's lessons. I guess that's just part of the passage. One of those life lessons is this consensus thing.

I spent most of my career as a system designer, in one form or another. One of the challenges of that is to incorporate diverse interests and points of view and end up with a homogeneous product, or at least one that won't fail the first stress test. When organizations began emphasizing teams, I despaired of ever producing a coherent system. Systems designed by committees are a disaster let alone when those committees are composed of bozos. Then I found this facilitation training (from an outfit called Interaction Associates) designed toward getting consensus in groups. I figured it couldn't hurt.

Well, what an epiphany that was! I know that I can safely say this to you without your fearing that I'm going to start draining the blood of chickens or sticking pins in dolls--it was a real born-again type experience. I don't want to be too maudlin here. Suffice to say that I quickly came to believe that consensus was possible if you just had the right attitude and used the right techniques. I wouldn't have believed if I hadn't personally been able to design and facilitate processes that ended up with consensus decisions from people who had been at each others' throats. It's been awesome. Made a big difference in my life, not just my work. It's changed my attitude and my comportment. I'd rather see the money we spend on prisons spent on training like that.

Needless to say, trash talk is not one of the techniques. <g>

Karen

P.S. None of which means that I don't know how to have fun.
