Monty Python ridiculed everybody. The effect was not the same. This series has concentrated its attentions:

Popetown is a ten-part animated sitcom about office politics in the workplace… only this workplace happens to be the Vatican and the CEO is the Pope...Popetown is a funny, satirical and bizarre take on the world of personal politics, sex and fame set in a fictional version of one of the most revered and mysterious cities in the world

Now, maybe I am fearing the worst for nothing, and "Popetown" will really be a subtly humorous version of "Yes, Minister" set at the Vatican, but the accompanying illustration of the Pope on a pogostick is not encouraging, shall we say.

The difference between this and other shows that poke fun at organized religion (eg. Vicar of Dibley) is that there is only one Pope, so the satire gets personal fast. The show has got to say whether it means to be satirizing the real pope or is operating in some alternate universe, and if it doesn't claim the second then it is doing the first. If the BBC did a show where a smirking Republican President used a pogo stick around the Oval Office, a lot of Americans wouldn't care for that either.

There is a difference between lampooning your own institutions and doing it to somebody else's.
