what is dark fiber

Dark fiber is the opposite of "lit fiber", if I am correct. That means that the physical fiber has been put in the ground and is all ready to be used, but in order to use it, the company purchasing the fiber has to put their own network infrastructure (i.e. switches, etc., I believe) in place and connect it to the fiber. Companies purchase the dark fiber because it is usually quite expensive to dig ditches and put fiber in the ground.
