LOL.... I don't think any of them even realizes that the BLS tracks the "participation rate" (percentage of adults who are in the workforce) in the economy, and that if people were leaving the workforce in droves the percentage of adults in the workforce would fall dramatically. Yet (surprise!) it hasn't fluctuated all that much.

Another interesting thing... if restaurants are on a hiring binge, then presumably demand for restaurants must also be surging.... after all, restaurants are not charities, they are self-interested small businesses, and they only hire when demand for their food warrants paying the money. But the first thing that a family cuts from its budget in lean times of unemployment is eating out. It's far cheaper to cook and eat at home, and when you're unemployed you tend to have the extra time to prepare meals at home too. You'd think that since so many millions have given up even looking for work, they would also have given up eating out, and busboy and burger-flipping hiring would be in precipitous decline. <g>
