There are three things we need to do as a country to level the playing field on free trade:

1. Adopt a National Health Plan, say by extending Medicare to everybody.

2. Adopt a value added tax, like Europe's and Japan's to finance 1 -- we can exclude food and medical services, most of which are produced domestically.

3. Do some radical tort reform to bring the costs of tort in line with other developed countries -- and, incidentally, reduce the costs of 1.

If we do these three things, the competitiveness of the US versus the rest of the world will skyrocket.
