Well, yes, I guess I could say that exercising the right to have an abortion in America is situational, if you mean that situational ethics are involved. Is that what you mean? Like the often repeated mantra that conservatives tend to be against abortion until it is their teenaged daughter with the bright future who has somehow gotten pregnant, and so their values suddenly change?

The article I cited earlier today about the fact that one fifth of pregnancies around the world are aborted, whether or not abortions are actually legal in any particular place, does convince me that we are looking at abortion too much from legal, moral and religious viewpoints, where really it is usually an act of desperation with a lot of our animal instincts wrapped up in it. I pretty sure this is a more primal--and thus stronger--urge than anything involving karma.

Karma seems to be whatever you want it to be! There was quite a rousing discussion of it here earlier, and I am surprised no one has replied to you yet with a brief reprise of some of the arguments.
