albedo - check out a few of my earlier posts (2488, 2493, & 2531). Qwest may have come to the conclusion that it doesn't cost much more to bury five conduits than two. Or, perhaps, they run two in some areas and five in others. Anyway, with five they will have more capability to run more fiber for more customers (or themselves). I think the difficult part is burying the conduit. They have repeated delays with other trains coming through and having to get out of the way, etc. The conduit is run by means of a train on the tracks, whereas the fiber is run through the conduit from the side, without blocking the tracks. One other thing. I don't know how their competitors are building their networks, but I don't think they have the same right-of-ways along RR tracks as QWST. This thing is going to be finished before the competitors'.
