QC Report - Tekserve

Talked to one of our desktop techs about QC on the new CPUs --
particularly as compared to CPUs 5-10 years ago. Some excerpts:

"It's an unfair comparison." Ten years ago desktop CPUs were built
like tanks but cost more; did less and had fewer things to break than
CPUs do now: Zips, CDs, modems, DVD-ROM/RAMs, built in monitors ...
and (on iMac) software which consumers consider part of the CPU.

"People expect much more of their computers than they used to."

Arguably they were *overbuilt* in the sense that they obsoleted
before they malfunctioned.

That Apple now only provides Apple Warranty/Care for three years,
pretty much tells you how long they think the lifespan of their units is.

For the most part, there are no "bad" cpu's or repeated problems with
any of the currently shipping desktops. "Mostly minor things."

He did have some concerns about the long-term effects of heat build
up on the iMac/Cube but that's what AppleCare is for.

OTOH, I had to replace the analog board on my thrice upgraded Mac
128/512/Plus two times in ... what ... 6 years?
