One of the "competitors" not often mentioned on this thread probably deserves at least a nod. At Seybold yesterday, Apple's now-bearded iCEO spun his usual spell while introducing a new machine and talking more about the new OS that will be released in October.

The new machine is called G4 and will no doubt help them maintain and maybe enlarge their design-professional market.

The OS (finally) gets distinct user accounts (just like Unix and NT have had for years, and somewhat like what Win9x has had from the beginning); an expanded Sherlock search engine; auto-updates; and internet-aware AppleScript.

Anyone with broadband (or great patience) who enjoys Jobs's incredible skills as a presenter can watch the intro, including their usual "toast the Pentium" demos:
