Nihil:

This was a top secret USN operation that wasn't declassified until about 10 years ago. My stepfather was involved in the operation and he personally was involved in sinking 2 of the subs and a third they took survivors.

The information was not gotten by debriefing captured Nazi spies, but came from British Intelligence who passed it on to the Secretary of War who in turn passed it on to the USN Command where the countermeasures were planned.

I am not surprised you are unfamiliar with it because most people still do not know it took place.

The book you refer to was published in 1975 and this operation was still classified as Top Secret then and in fact was never revealed until the Freedom of Information Act was used to get the full story.

It was not a hoax, but the real thing. They weren't "robot" rocket bombs, but V-2s that were mounted on undersea sleds and towed by the U-boats. My stepfather was with the task force that actually intercepted them. Part of the story appeared as an article in Reader's Digest about 8 or 9 years ago.
