Silicon Motion: None of Our Controllers Affected by the Windows 11 Bug

Exclusive by btarunr

Silicon Motion is a major SSD controller vendor, with a contemporary lineup of controllers spanning all client, enterprise, and consumer flash storage form-factors. It is also a major competitor to Phison, which recently announced that specific SSD models based on some of its controllers are affected by a recent Windows 11 OS update that causes these drives to crash, albeit with no data loss.

In a statement to TechPowerUp, Silicon Motion says that thus far, none of its SSD controllers are affected by the Windows 11 update bug. "Regarding the Windows 11 update issue: so far, none of the SMI controllers have experienced such a problem," the company said. This doesn't necessarily mean that the company is guaranteeing that its controllers aren't affected, it only means that so far, none of the SSD vendors implementing Silicon Motion controllers have reported back to them with issues. Just a few days ago, it was uncovered that a bug causes the latest Windows 11 "patch Tuesday" monthly update, KB5063878, to break SSDs powered by various SSD controllers. This can be reproduced on affected machines if the SSD is subjected to about 50 GB of sustained writes or controller load of over 60%.
