Some options comments from Dow Jones on Nov 30th

"Rolling activity will likely increase across the market as traders adjust longterm options positions to avoid parting with their stock. Indeed, a trader with a large put position in Novell rolled 4,000 December 20 puts to the same strike price in January."

Can anyone explain the logic of this?
