I will toss on some more logs, to keep the fire burning:
It is arguable that it took a conservative anti- Nazi like Adenauer to ensure that there was a meaningful German commitment to Atlanticism and democracy;
It is arguable that Franco saved Spain from Sovietization, and that by withholding support from the Axis, he ensured Allied victory;
It is arguable that DeGaulle, by once and for all uniting the monarchist and republican threads of French history into one conception of La Belle France, provided the needed breakthrough to create a modern conservative opposition to a Red alliance, untainted by Vichy, and therefore ensured that the Communists would not hijack the Liberation....
