I have to agree with Didier Legall's comments on MPEG-4 as a solution in search of an application. The Version 1 Committee Draft has been approved, but Version 2 is still in flux. Part of MPEG-4 is targeted for applications such as mobile video-phones. Unfortunately, the MPEG-4 committee wants MPEG-4 to be used in many different applications. This means that there will be many different modes or profiles, and there does not seem to be a baseline mode of operation. Therefore, an MPEG-4 codec used in one application may not interoperate with an MPEG-4 codec used in a different application. Nevertheless, there may a a subset of MPEG-4 that sees heavy commercial application.
