I have purchased a new computer with XP, my first XP experience. Running over a network and DSL. Installed Norton Firewall.

The system on start-up tries to access the internet with two programs. I'm wondering what these are and whether they are benign, necessary, or unnecessary.

one is: MessageApp MFC Application

the other is: Generic Host Processor Win 32 Services

Does anybody know why these are trying to access the internet on every start-up, whether I need to let them access it, what they do, and what happens if I block them permanently?

TIA for any info!
