Nobody is going to win! The cable companies will get some business, the Telcos some and the wireless guys some. With respect to cable modems, only the downstream is in place. Less than 10% of cable systems have actually implemented upstream which creates a problem while 100% of Telcos have twisted pairs to 97% of all homes. To make a cable modem work upstream one must build the return path and then deal with its noise funneling effects as well as bidirectional sharing of bandwidth which if you look carefully, looks pretty bad if a lot of users sign up to a 2000 home segment. xDSL is point to point with no sharing. Its not clear who will win, all sides have some work to do. Cable modems are nowhere near as mature as ISDN - not even close!
