I'd say the chief goal for Israel in this latest offensive is to draw the U.S. into the fray. They are trying to be so destructive to Lebanon that the international community is forced to react. Then, the U.S. will quickly intervene, because American leaders (Dem and Repub) panic at the sight of the UN gaining legitimacy.
