Abercrombie 'tweets' way into race for Hawaii gov

AP - Saturday, March 07, 2009
By JAYMES SONG
Democratic Rep. Neil Abercrombie announced Saturday that he will run for Hawaii governor next year, saying he was inspired by his longtime friend Barack Obama to bring change.

The 10-term congressman made the official announcement on his campaign Web site and on the micro-blogging platform Twitter.

"Aloha everybody! I want you to know I'm running for governor of Hawaii in 2010. Let's bring change to Washington Place!" Abercrombie said in his 21-word "tweet." Washington Place is part of the Hawaii governor's residential compound.

The 70-year-old Abercrombie said in an open letter on his campaign Web site that as honorary chairman
of the Obama campaign in Hawaii, "I saw how we could run a different kind of campaign that involved and inspired people and ultimately brought change to the nation. Now, we must do the same for Hawaii."

Abercrombie has served in the House of Representatives since 1991. Before that, he was a longtime Hawaii legislator and a member of the Honolulu City Council.

"I am well aware that you often feel let down by government. You don't want government to do everything," he wrote. "But you want it to do what it is supposed to do, and do it well."

Abercrombie is the first major Democrat to enter the party's primary contest, which eventually could include Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann and Hawaii Senate President Colleen Hanabusa. Republican Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona announced he was running more than a year and a half ago.

State law bars Gov. Linda Lingle, Hawaii's first GOP governor in four decades, from seeking a third term next year.

Abercrombie's announcement came a day earlier than expected. He is expected to quickly start raising money he will need for what could be a tough primary contest in September 2010.

The state Campaign Spending Commission already has said Abercrombie cannot transfer the $1 million that was in his House campaign committee as of December to a state campaign.
