My wife's grandmother fell down the basement stairs and banged her head. She seemed completely normal but her granddaughter (Mayo MD) insisted she go to the ER. Sure enough about an hour later she went into a coma. They operated to relieve the pressure and even removed a part of her brain. No good. All the docs said she was brain dead. Everyone said their goodbyes and sent her to the hospice. They took turns sitting with her but who ever was "on" was out of the room when a hospice nurse came in one morning and (as they do) said good morning Maggie, how are you this morning. Everyone was amazed when she heard a weak "I'm ok" from grandma.

Unlike other departments in the hospital the hospice workers LOVE it when they lose a patient. Maggie lived another very happy 5 years after that. Except for a few verbal glitches she was perfectly normal - eg. afterwords she always called my son Alex Ajax.
