My stove can easily accept 5" thick pieces. I split many pieces of the trash wood this thick because it burns so fast. 27"? No. 20" or a tad bit bigger is the maximum length.

Mine is a cast iron one but some of the people who build houses out here are buying metal ones which look nice and are a lot cheaper. I do not think they are as efficient, though, and none of them seem to be able to go all night and still have coals in the morning. Also, even the front loading ones (which mine is) don't seem to take very large pieces of wood.

I laughed over the living situation you have with your girl friend. One of my brothers has a similar situation except that his house is about 1/2 a mile away. After 8 years, they are still both happy living this way. Works great for them. No conflicts over who gets rid of what when two households combine into one.
