AMD/INTC: Intel ran a story suggesting the competitive balance in the chip war between Intel and AMD should shift back to Intel later this year. The story quoted a Deutsche Bank analyst who had a Buy on Intel and a Sell on AMD. Intel has four times the R&D budget of AMD, and plans second half 2006 chip rollouts that use an improved energy saving microarchitechture. In the near term AMD is likely to gain additional market share due to design win momentum at AMD.

TSM/UMC: Taiwan Semi reported March sales jumped 12.9% from Feb, and 53.9% from last year. TSM shares fell 1% in Asian trading. The Multex March quarter sales growth estimate is 30.1%. United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) reported 20.7% Y/Y sales growth in March. The Multex March quarter rev growth estimate for UMC is +19.2%. UMC bought back 43 million common shares on the open market on April 7. In less than 2 months, UMC bought back a total of 940.01 milion shares.

The firm noted impressive subscriber growth at TWTC, CVC, Charter, Comcast, Rogers, Shaw, and Videotron. iLocus reported SONS enjoyed the leading US VoIP market share with 113.7B minutes carried.
