  COLD SNAP HITS YUKON
=== Temperatures plunge to -52 deg (Celsius) ===
  WHITEHORSE (CP)
Yukoners were hit with savagely cold weather and thick ice fog yesterday as the thermometer dipped to record lows.
Towing company staff were too busy to talk, some residents had no heat and the Yukon Weather Centre was bombarded with telephone calls.
In Whitehorse, possible THE WARMEST COMMUNITY (!), it's only a matter of waiting to see what will break the record, said Gregory Pearce of the Yukon Weather Centre.
"The record low is -43.4 set back in 1991, and we're colder than that now," he said. It was -45 at the Whitehorse airport yesterday morning.
Mayo and Dawson City were the coldest communities at -52!
The owner of Gerry's Towing said that in the past few days he's had to turn down about 500 calls.
Taxi companies are experiencing the same demand.
There are a lot of people without heat, said Don Fulmer, the owner of Fireweed Plumbing Heating and Sheet Metal.
"Lots of PROPANE PROBLEMS, propane not flowing out of the tanks because it's too cold," he said (!)
The cold was affecting air travel as well.
Phil Dyke, customer service manager for Canadian Airlines International Ltd., said the morning arrival from Vancouver was delayed because of ice fog at the Whitehorse airport.
Jow Sparling, operations manager for Air North, said flights to Dawson City, Old Crow and Fairbanks were cancelled Tuesday and yesterday because of the cold.
