VIFL STORY
[ From Dow Jones 9/18/97 ]

It's a long article. Here are some excerpts:

Dow Jones Newswires -- September 18, 1997
Food Tech Up 73% On Irradiation Legislation Proposal
Dow Jones Newswires
By Kate Berry

MIAMI (Dow Jones)--Shares of tiny Food Technology Service Inc. (VIFL) have surged dramatically since a U.S. representative proposed legislation to approve the treatment of red meat with radiation.

...

Rep. Greg Ganske, R-Iowa, said on the House floor Wednesday that irradiation is needed after last month's recall of 25 million pounds of beef by Hudson Foods Inc. (HFI).

"There is ample evidence that it kills pathogens and promotes health," said Ganske, who is also a surgeon.

...

If the FDA does not act on the petition within 60 days, then Ganske said he would push separate legislation, which he introduced Tuesday, to pass the petition.

...

"Once this system is approved by the FDA, I think then we contact the Burger Kings, the Wendy's and McDonald's of the world," he said [Pete Ellis, CEO]. "A person can order a medium rare hamburger and not die from it and have the taste and flavor back in hamburgers."
