Nine percent of wired travelers book online
The number of travelers who use the Internet for travel-related and other purposes jumped from 29 million in 1996 to 70 million in 1998, a 141 percent increase in two years, the Travel Industry Association of America reported. The report found that 33.8 million travelers used the Internet for travel planning, up from 11.7 million in 1997 and 3.1 million in 1996, a 1,000 percent increase in two years. In 1998, one-half of all travelers booked online (48 percent) and one half of all frequent travelers booked online (51 percent) consulted the Internet to get information on destinations or to check prices and schedules. "If the recent increases in traveler usage is any indication, the Internet and online services are the travel planning medium of the future," said the association's president, William S. Norman. He added that the telephone survey of 1,200 adults conducted last September also found 6.7 million American adults used the Internet or an online service to make travel reservations in the past year.
