I've used Altavista heavily since it first came out in 1995. It was once the main search engine for Yahoo!. Originally it had the URL:

altavista.digital.com

I think Digital (DEC) originally bought some of the technology from a company called Altavista, who owned the URL altavista.com. They (Altavista) linked their web site to Digital's Altavista site and gained a bit of popularity from one of Digital's hundreds of SNAFUs. Either CMGI or Compaq finally acquired the altavista.com site ending numerous legal challenges from Digital. Digital's Altavista division pioneered some great technology, but the management knew very little about how to take advantage of Wall Street. Management has been reshuffled a few times -- a number of the original people are long gone.

I still use Altavista as my main search engine, however, newer search engines also provide the information I want as well. One interesting approach was pioneered by

dogpile.com

Oh well, this IPO is way, way too late. I can't see anyone being too enthusiastic about it. Also, I've been waiting nearly a month for Altavista to fix their local access number so I can log on using their Free ISP service. At least they offer a 1-800 number for complaints.
