NUKO/WESTELL ADSL-interactive Video integration may be tested by PACIFIC BELL---
June 4, 1996-- Nuko Information Systems Inc. (San Jose, Calif.), a vendor of switched digital
video systems, today announced plans to integrate Westell's 1.5 Mbit/s Flexcap ADSL modem into
its Highlander digital video codec systems. The resulting product will be what the company calls an
"ADSL MPEG-2 digital video codec system." While the announcement puts wind into the sails of
Westell's video-on-demand efforts, it may also signal the trial of Westell modems by Pacific Bell;
given that Nuko is a major systems integrator for the RBOC.

Sources at Nuko say that there is a requirement to provide copper broadband solutions within
Pacific Bell and the Nuko/Westell ADSL solution is a likely contender. Pacific Bell sources would
not confirm or deny a forthcoming ADSL trial but did say "the opportunity to deliver MPEG2 over
twisted pair will revolutionize distance learning and will be of particular interest in K-12
educational facilities." Given the shortage of teachers in California, a copper-based video
distribution system would probably be a hit in Pac Bell's territory. The companies would not
disclose when production units would be available.
