I noticed Voisey's Bay, the big nickel find, mentioned. Some prospectors were returning home after a search for diamonds elsewhere, were returning in a helicopter, one guy looked down at a hill he saw, looked a little closer, they investigated further and the rest is history - $billions! Just from looking out the window of the helicopter - completely unplanned - just the curious but well trained eye observing something - now a very rich guy. So...one way is by sheer luck, albeit with the help of a curious mind and observant inclination - the other is with these kind of instruments. Ref: sciencenorth.ca
