  SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 1997--
  Companies Announce that ParcPlace-Digitalk's
VisualWave 2.0 Now Certified for Use with
  Hewlett-Packard's VirtualVault Software
Parcplace Digitalk Inc today announced HP certification of VisualWave 2.0 for use with HP's VirtualVault software. Together, the products will allow companies in such industries as financial services and telecommunications (among others) to rapidly deploy secure electronic-commerce solutions across the World Wide Web.
As a complete object-oriented development environment for both client/server Intranets and the Web, VisualWave allows corporations to either reuse existing client/server applications or develop new ones and then deploy those applications directly on the Web. HP's VirtualVault software, on the other hand, is the first comprehensive security solution for electronic commerce, ensuring end-to-end integrity of all internal and external transactions. Used in tandem, VisualWave and VirtualVault will provide corporations with both rapid Web application deployment and unprecedented security for Web transactions.
"HP's preeminent web security solution, VirtualVault, combined with ParcPlace's leading OO development environment, VisualWave, provides customers with a best-in-class, integrated Web development environment for electronic commerce," said Carol G. Mills, HP general manager of the Enterprise Solutions Division. "Companies can now quickly deploy secure Web applications to meet the needs of their customers."
  Product Information
  HP's VirtualVault
Part of HP's Praesidium enterprise security framework, VirtualVault addresses the weak link in security by providing a secure gateway to the enterprise and granting selective access to sensitive information. At the foundation of VirtualVault is a trusted operating system that exceeds strict U.S. government B1 and European E3 standards and has been used in military agencies' computer networks. VirtualVault provides data partitioning and least privilege (no root) to ensure a more secure environment for Web applications.
All electronic transactions bound for sensitive internal applications must travel through VirtualVault's trusted gateway, which acts as a safeguard against users and applications gaining unauthorized access to information or systems and provides support for VirtualVault administration. Administration of the Web server and the operating system is simplified through a browser-based interface. VirtualVault also incorporates a Netscape Web server to handle external Web requests.
Corporate firewalls, in comparison, provide necessary protection between organizations and the Internet, filtering common network services such as e-mail, telnet and File Transfer Protocol services. However, they do not provide protection for the Web transaction itself. Firewalls and VirtualVault are thus complimentary and are used side-by-side in an architecture that connects to the Internet.
  VisualWave 2.0
This latest release of ParcPlace's object-oriented development environment for the World Wide Web offers significantly expanded support for leading Internet scripting technologies, including JavaScript, Java, ActiveX and VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). VisualWave 2.0 also features support for "smartHTML" (including HTML framesets), delivering dynamic HTML generation that provides users with browser independence. These features provide the developer with the capabilities necessary to build dynamic, scaleable client/server/web applications.
The software will allow users to paint a specification for a group of framesets or frames and then permit them to edit those specifications from the Frames Editor. This capability enables rapid development of Web applications with multiple interacting "windows" - similar to those found in traditional client/server applications.
In addition, developers will be able to maximize application response by incorporating JavaScript events and function, Client Pull web page updates, and two-way communication with Java applets. Ease-of-use and reuse of existing VisualWorks applications and business objects offer existing customers an immediate solution for Intranet and Internet application deployments.
