Vodafone makes $45 billion offer for AirTouch

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- In a move calculated to disrupt AirTouch Communications' (ATI) merger talks with Bell Atlantic Corp. (BEL), Britain's Vodafone Group has made a counter offer. Citing unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday reported that Vodafone (VOD-LS) has offered to buy AirTouch Communications for more than $45 billion. A link-up between AirTouch and Vodafone, Britain's biggest mobile phone provider, would establish an international cellular giant. AirTouch, the largest independent wireless company in America, has major overseas holdings, especially in Europe. According to the Wall Street Journal, these would fit well with Vodafone's interests in Europe and elsewhere.
