Aiming to increase the flexibility of its mobile network equipment for the world market, Ericsson is reportedly looking to incorporate NTT DoCoMo 3G standards in its new equipment.

Ericsson CEO Carl-Henrik Svanberg was apparently in Japan this week to meet with executives from the operator to discuss partnership possibilities.

While Ericsson’s network business has fared better than those of some rivals in recent years, the company is still part of the industry-wide push to produce more interoperable solutions and improve the affordability of its products for operator customers.

It seems this is the thinking behind incorporating DoCoMo standards and forming a new partnership.

According to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Industri, Svanberg has met with a positive response to his initiative to incorporateFOMA 3G standards in Ericsson’s networks, which would allow it to supply the gear in Japan completely without modification.

DoCoMo already has a high-profile partnership with French-headquartered Alcatel for technology development in Japan and Europe, the two announcing yesterday a project in Japan to promote the development of indoor 3G applications. <<
